Addressing Root Cause of Homelessness in America

Homelessness over 3.5 million Americans each year which creates a major social challenge for the community and economic management of America. According to survey conducted by Home Aid America, the issue of homelessness has increased in the recent years and points to the worsening economic, political and social conditions. It creates tremendous pressure for the management of proper life conditions of millions of Americans. There are a number of factors which contribute to the rising rate of homelessness in America but the financial crisis which started in 2008 and led to a number of foreclosures created significant spurt in the rise of homelessness. Foreclosure crisis which started in 2008 plays an important role in increasing overall rise in cases of homelessness.

Financial crisis of 2008 created an increase in the rate of foreclosures which increased the problem of homelessness. “In 2008, state and local homeless groups reported a 61% rise in homelessness since the foreclosure crisis began” (“Homelessness in America: Overview of Data and Causes”, 2016). This clearly indicates the manner in which the issues and problems related to homelessness has been increasing on account of the increase in the rate of foreclosures after the financial crisis which began in 2008.

The increasing rate of evictions under the foreclosures continues to increase the number of homeless people in America. “Approximately 40% of families facing eviction due to foreclosure are renters; the problem may continue to worsen as renters represent a rising segment of the U.S. population” (“Homelessness in America: Overview of Data and Causes”, 2016). This would mean that the impact of the evictions under the presence of foreclosures would be an important factor which creates negative pressure on the availability of households for the homeless people. Such kind of critical area of social and economic issue creates pressure for the management of the proper integration of the homeless within proper shelters and homes.

The lack of proper housing and affordable housing facilities create issues in terms of managing the needs of the homeless. It has been reported that only 5.8 million rental units were available for over 10 million people who fell within the category of identified as “extremely low incomes” (ELI) (“Homelessness in America: Overview of Data and Causes”, 2016). This means that the economic factors which have been worsening after the beginning of the financial crisis has been unable to cater to the needs of the low income sections of the society. The absence of adequate low rent affordable housing facilities push the low income people into conditions of homelessness. A robust housing facility for the homeless with affordable rent has been missing on account of the issues which have been seen since the start of the foreclosures crisis (Desmond, 2016).

Lack of proper response of the government in providing adequate affordable housing facilities after the foreclosures crisis has been adding to the problem of homelessness. With meager resources being devoted for tackling this crisis, the availability of proper housing facilities for the homeless have been absence in adequate numbers.

Many argue that foreclosure crisis could be regarded as limited period event which does not impact the condition of homelessness in the current period. But such kind of assessment cannot be held true as the impact of foreclosures has been impacting people even in the 2016 where over 6 million homes had gone into foreclosures (Levy, 2018).

The issues which are related to over 3.5 million people who are homeless in America has been closely related to the factor of rising rate foreclosures after the financial crisis in 2008. The economic slowdown after 2008 has created challenges for the management of proper shelter and housing for the people. The crisis related to foreclosures has created factors which increased the issues related to homelessness. Proper efforts to control the rates of foreclosures and providing adequate amount of affordable housing would be necessary for the purpose of managing the needs of the people.
